[Abk. IM, dt. »Sofortbenachrichtigung«], eine Form des Chats. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Idee der virtuellen Präsenz: Man pflegt eine Kontaktliste (»Buddy List«) mit Namen von anderen Mitgliedern des jeweiligen Instant-Messaging-Systems, die einen darüber informiert, wer gerade online ist. Man kann unmittelbar eine Nachricht verschicken oder einen Chat mit einem Teilnehmer, der online ist, beginnen. Instant Messaging ist quasi eine Echtzeit-E-Mail-Variante, und das Chatten funktioniert ohne vorherige Terminabsprache und Vereinbarung eines Treffpunkts in einem Chat-Room. Darüber hinaus bieten die unterschiedlichen Instant-Messaging-Systeme zusätzliche Funktionen, wie Diskussionsforen, Terminplaner usw.
 
Um über einen Messaging-Dienst Nachrichten auszutauschen, muss man lediglich eines der kostenlos verfügbaren IM-Programme von der Website des jeweiligen Anbieters herunterladen (leider sind die verschiedenen Programme nicht - oder nur kaum - kompatibel zueinander). Nach der Installation läuft der Instant Messenger separat im Hintergrund und meldet sich bei jedem Gang ins Netz selbstständig bei seinem Server an. Sofort überprüft das Programm, ob Bekannte online sind, und zeigt dies gegebenenfalls an.
 
Marktforscher vermuten, dass IM in naher Zukunft die gängigen Kommunikationsmittel wie E-Mail oder Telefon ablösen könnte.
